The Varsity, a small Atlanta-based fast food chain of eight locations, is famous for chili dogs and chili burgers, fries, and onion rings. While each location has a slightly different menu, they all have these basic items in common. Also common, the “What’ll ya have?” called out every time a new order is taken.
The #2 combo at the original Varsity location in downtown Atlanta consists of a chili cheeseburger, chili cheese dog, fries and a medium soft drink. Pictured above, you can see what you can expect.
First, my impressions of the chili. It’s a meat-based chili, hot and oily. That’s the way I like it, of course, at my favorite place – Original Tommy’s in Southern California (and Nevada.) But while Tommy’s chili is spiced and seasoned, I found The Varsity’s chili bland. The cheese was equally dull, getting lost in the chili to the point where I didn’t even taste it.
The meat on the burger is grilled up almost homemade-style. That means you can expect some gristle and crispy bits. The hot dog meat, however, was cooked well and the dog pops when you bite into it. I liked the hot dog better than the burger.
On the side, the fries are delicious. Nice thick slices, fried up crispy on the outside but fluffy on the inside. And plentiful, as you can see from the picture.
All in all, the meal was fine, but not exciting. It certainly didn’t turn me into the drooling child that I’m transformed into whenever I make it out to Tommy’s.
