As we said in 2016, one of the fast food trends to watch for is more descriptive names for new fast food menu items. Well, try this one on for size: McDonald’s Maple Bacon Dijon with Artisan Grilled Chicken Sandwich. What a mouthful!
Every few years it seems McDonald’s takes another run at building a better chicken sandwich. They usually fail, as described in our 2015 review of their then “premium” sandwich. And a link in that article back to 2011’s sorry state of affairs. Well, chicken lovers rejoice: there is a better chicken sandwich now at McDonald’s as part of the Signature Crafted lineup. It’s not great, but it is better. Read on.
Arriving in a standard cardboard box with understated black print, the Signature Crafted menu at McDonald’s allows you to try various premium sandwiches in either beef burger, fried chicken or grilled chicken varieties. With three choices of toppings (maple bacon dijon, sweet bbq bacon, or pico guacamole) and three meats that’s nine possible sandwiches. Although, for some reason the McDonald’s website doesn’t show a bbq bacon burger, but I don’t see why you couldn’t order one.
Here, I opted for the grilled chicken. But whatever nutritional benefit I achieved by passing over the fried chicken were probably overwhelmed by the fact that you’re still getting cheese, bacon and honey dijon sauce. Whatever, it tastes good and that’s what counts.
The guts of the sandwich show that they didn’t skimp on the bacon. They did skimp on the lettuce though. Sad. But still, I found this sandwich to be juicy, saucy and full of flavor, a welcome change in direction from McD’s usual foul fare.
I’m not sure how long the signature series will be around. It seems my local store in Arizona is late to the game, as I saw this menu in California last year. Nevertheless, the upgraded sandwiches are a welcome alternative to the core McDonald’s offerings and worth checking out.
