Freddy’s Frozen Custard & Steakburgers offers a pretty good selection of hand-smashed patty burgers, hot dogs, and the previously-reviewed Chicken Tenders. The Freddy’s Original Double is their featured Number One combo. The sandwich consists of two “steakburger” patties, American cheese, mustard, onion, and pickles. The Bacon & Cheese Double ups the ante with the addition of bacon. As you can see, it’s not a dinky fast food burger.
The flattened steakburger patties take some getting used to. They are smashed down so much that two patties equals the thickness of what I would normally see out of a single large burger patty at another fast food restaurant. Still, the meat is substantial, salty, and savory. Plenty for sharing with a furry dog companion who just happens to be in the car with you and who, coincidentally, also likes hamburgers.
The addition of bacon gives the flavor you expect, but I found the strips a bit too thin to be exciting. You can see how they hang out of the sandwich in the above picture. Overall, the flavor combination is good. The large pickle slices add a little style. The meat-to-condiment ratio is 1.1:1, meaning you definitely taste the meat but it doesn’t completely overpower the burger.
All in all, there’s no real difference between the Bacon & Cheese Double and the Original Double, apart from the thin bacon strips. You save about 80 cents by going without the bacon, but if you want the extra kick, it’s not a big premium.
