As you may recall, Del Taco sent me a mysterious red box at the beginning of the year that contained a bunch of feathers and a rubber turkey. Touting their new line of Turkey Tacos, I had to wait a bit as they didn’t roll out until the first weekend of January.
I ordered both the crunchy and soft variety and they are both shown below. You can get any menu item that uses ground beef in turkey instead, although they were just advertising tacos and Crunchtadas at the store.
The turkey tacos taste similar to the seasoned ground beef. These, too, are seasoned and ground. If you close your eyes and don’t pay too much attention, you may not even notice you are not eating beef.
The tacos cost a hefty $1.25. That’s steep for a basic taco. They try to plus it up by adding chunks of tomato but it is still just a standard 3-topping taco. As you can see above, the ground turkey is dark and richly seasoned. Add in some sauce and you are good to go.
My thoughts? There is a slight aftertaste that is probably more the result of expecting the flavor of beef than an issue with the turkey itself. Otherwise, apart from the tomatoes, there is no real difference between these tacos and their beef kin. They were tasty and satisfying. They advertise these as having 33% less fat than the seasoned beef. For some strange reason, they are not available in Oklahoma. Big cattle lobby maybe?
