Ono Hawaiian BBQ

ono hawaiian bbq logo

Ono Hawaiian BBQ is a small west-coast chain offering chicken and beef dishes with a distinctly Hawaiian flair.  BBQ, Teriyaki, Island Curry, and Chicken Katsu are just some of the specialties.  They also offer beef, pork and seafood menu items, along with a couple including that Hawaii staple, Spam.  For sides, Ono offers rice and macaroni salad and serves their food accented with cabbage.

The chicken is moist and tasty – like what you might grill yourself at home.  In fact, I can’t recall a more moist chicken at a fast food or quick serve restaurant.  The food is just different enough to feel like a treat but convenient enough to enjoy as an alternative to other more traditional fast food fare.

The Japanese/Polynesian influenced menu might be more at home in our International restaurant category.  But Hawaii being a state, we think it fits best in the Chicken category where the majority of their menu is centered.

Next time you are in Northern or Southern California or the Phoenix area, check them out!

Raising Canes

raising canes

Raising Canes is a small chicken finger chain operating outlets in more than a dozen states. The menu is an exercise in simplicity: chicken fingers. That’s it. You can have them as is or on a bun, but no burgers here. There are a few main combinations, all basically settling upon the number of fingers and whether you get one or two sides. My box had four fingers, crinkle fries, cole slaw and a piece of Texas toast.

Yummm! The chicken fingers were juicy, salty and crispy. They come with secret “Cane sauce” which hopefully is not in any way connected to the fact that the namesake “Cane” is a dog. The crinkle fries were thin and tasty. The cole slaw was cool and sweet. The Texas toast was, well, unnecessary.

Raising Cane’s has a fun restaurant atmosphere, with a mirrored disco ball, campy movie posters, and top 40 music to entertain you while you feast. They claim they can crank out 100 fingers in just a few minutes, making them an excellent go-to for last minute parties.

Check out Raising Cane’s and enjoy something different.

Zaxby’s

Zaxby’s is a regional fast food chicken chain with over 500 stores in 11 states.  Founded in Georgia in 1990, Zaxby’s focuses on fresh chicken items (grilled and fried).

I enjoyed my visit to Zaxby’s.  The staff was friendly and the food was served hot.  The menu entirely made up of chicken items, with a focus on chicken breast sandwiches, wings and strips.  I opted for the Cajun Club, a hearty meal with a large white meat breast, bacon, lettuce, tomato and mayo on a sturdy bun.  The “basket” I ordered came with crinkle fries, a welcome sight.  The soda fountain even had crushed ice, my favorite kind.

Next time you find yourself in the south and are hankerin’ for a quick chicken snack, bypass that other southern chicken juggernaut and try this down home fast food treat.

Pioneer Chicken

pioneer chickenAbout: 1 independent location: 5970 W Olympic Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90036-4610 | Facebook Page

Author Recommends: 2 piece basket with fries

Quite possibly the greatest fried chicken on any known planet, this once-great chain has been reduced to a total of five individually owned stores. Although the fried chicken landscape is now dominated by the likes of KFC, Popeye’s, and Church’s, ask anyone who remembers Pioneer and I’d bet they have only fond memories of the chain.

pioneer2Visiting one of these restaurants today is like going back in time. The decor, furniture, signs, and even the corn on the cob leisurely rotating in the little “carousel of butter” are a testament to a time when people didn’t worry about such things as “cholesterol” or “light menus.” In fact, the restaurant might very well have been sent through a time warp, emerging intact, albeit a little sun-faded, in present day.

What makes Pioneer so great is, of course, the chicken. “Golden” is a term that should be reserved pioneer 3exclusively for the look and feel of this chicken. Order the 2-piece chicken in a basket with fries to get a great taste of what Pioneer has to offer.

Obviously, because of the fact that the chain is really five independent stores, the prices and menu selection will vary. Many “un-Pioneer” items will creep onto the menu, but Pioneer purists will stick to chicken (and the chicken may even stick to you!) -RB
