Five Guys

Five Guys’ focus on a simple menu has delicious results.  Burgers, cheeseburgers, and a stray hot dog or two are the only entrees.  the service is fast and friendly.  You can nibble on shelled peanuts while you wait for your order.

Burgers and cheeseburgers are all served as doubles by default.  If you don’t want that much meat, order a “Little” for a single patty.  The meat is juicy and fresh and always cooked “well done”.  Combined with the extensive selection of free toppings it reminded me of a burger I would make on a backyard bbq.  The bun is sturdy enough to survive through to the last bite – quite a feat for a burger with so many toppings.

A generous portion of fries placed in your bag with more dumped on top is enough for two or three hungry people.  They are moist and delicious, and I appreciate the ability to coat them in vinegar (I’m old school).

All in all, a tasty treat, but not something I’d want to eat every day, or even every week.  And when you split the fries with a couple of friends, the overall cost is reasonable.

Tommy’s

Quite possibly, the greatest chili burger on the planet. Tommy’s has been pleasing residents of Los Angeles and Orange Counties for decades. It has become an institution almost purely by word of mouth. No TV ads, no radio promotions. Tommy’s has always focused on what makes it great: chili burgers, chili dogs, chili tamales and fries (with or without chili.)

For the uninitiated, Tommy’s will come as quite a shock. The menu is simple and the prices include sales tax (a great idea). All burgers come with chili unless otherwise stated. The cheese is tasty. The tomatoes are huge. Extra pickles? Extra onions? No problem. No extra charge.

If you are a tourist, be very careful when looking for a Tommy’s. There are countless imitators, all offering “world famous chili burgers” and often changing the spelling of their names to avoid legal entanglements. The real Tommy’s will always have a red sign with an image of the original “shack”, the first store which was an outdoor stand.

A tip about the “combo” menu. Unlike other major fast food chains, ordering a combo by number (like a “Number 1”) does not save you money. The food is just grouped together at regular price for your “ordering convenience.” -RB

Wendy’s

About: Founded in 1969, Columbus, OH

Great tasting burgers and other yummy treats. Wendy’s has been pleasing palates for over 30 years. Their signature square burger patties mean you can actually see the meat, emphasized in the famous (or infamous) ’80’s slogan “where’s the beef?”

Whataburger

It has been a LONG time since I went to Whataburger. So I made the trek across town (my nearest one is out of business) and gave them a try.

whataburger sandwich

The sandwich is your basic burger. Not bad, but not spectacular. As you can see from the updated menu, they offer the ability to do some customization, but the toppings are not special. I opted for the standard Whataburger single patty with cheese and it tasted like what you might have at a backyard bbq with friends. That is to say, good and homemade tasting, not processed. But there is something missing and I think it is a signature sauce.

whataburger guts

My opinion is they could stand to jazz up their selection with a few sauces. Thousand Island, BBQ, maybe some more zesty and exotic sauces I probably wouldn’t try. Their Whataburger Jr., which I also ordered, came nicely equipped with all the toppings of its papa. But again, it is nothing to write home about. With other chains like Carl’s Jr. and Jack In The Box seemingly coming up with a new burger every week (not quite) it seems odd to me that Whataburger has not innovated since I last tried them. Which now that I think about it must’ve been six or seven years ago. Unless you think you are In-N-Out or some other chain with a distinctive product, that is a lifetime.

Bottom line, for a small fish in a very big pond, Whataburger seems content to offer a basic lineup. Good luck with that.

Wienerschnitzel

About: Founded in 1961, Wilmington, CA. 300 locations in the western U.S.

Contact: 877-709-DOGS(3647)

Author Recommends: Chili Cheese Dog

Many of the red (now yellow) A-framed restaurants that were original Wienerschnitzel restaurants are now home to another Southern California success story, Tommy’s. However, although they both sell chili dogs and chili burgers, you need to keep both Wienerschnitzel and Tommy’s separate.

I’d wager that the fries at Wienerschnitzel are some of the best of any Southern California chain. Like McDonald’s, these fries are great straight out of the bag.

If you are feeling health conscious and find yourself at Wienerschnitzel, the first thing you should probably ask yourself is “Why am I at a hot dog place if I am feeling health conscious?” Getting this initial conundrum out of the way, you can always order an all-beef hot dog or even a Healthy Choice wiener. This will at least make you feel better about eating that delicious chili dog and may even help you justify the melted cheese you spontaneously added to your order. -RB

Togos

About: Founded in 1971, San Jose, CA. 250 locations

Author Recommends: BBQ Beef (#25)

Great sandwiches (their BBQ beef is yummy!) The only thing I would change is their cashier system. They have sandwich makers assemble your order and then you have to wait for the cashier to ring you up. It might make sense to put the cashier at the end of the counter so that everyone can move along the counter in an orderly fashion. This seems to work well for Subway.
