cook out bbq tray

On my second visit to Cook Out, a small southeastern US fast food chain, I tried the BBQ sandwich tray. As you may recall, the tray is their name for a combo, which includes two sides and a drink with the base menu item all for $4.99 (at my location in Georgia.)

As advertised on the Carl's Jr. website, the California Classic seems to be an unapologetic knock-off of the famous In-n-Out Double Double. Consider the assembly: two beef patties, two slices of American cheese, Thousand Island, grilled onions, lettuce and tomato. Even the website wording "double meat, double cheese" will be familiar to those who grew up around the In-n-Out burger of similar construction. As is often the case, there's a bit of a difference between the food stylist picture (below) and what I received (above), but the real question is "how does it taste?"

We recently introduced Cook Out to the Fast Food Source family, and now it's time to look at the food. For $4.99, you can pick from this menu:

As you can see, you are able to mix and match some interesting combinations including a bunch of chicken items which can count as sides. Very generous for the price.

Here's a showdown of two big fast food chicken sandwiches from Carl's Jr: The Big Chicken Fillet Sandwich and the Chicken Club Sandwich.

Right off the bat, you can tell that the Big Chicken Fillet dwarfs the Chicken Club in sheer size. Arriving in the big promotional box, you know you're in for some serious eating before you even raise the lid. I'm not sure why the cooks bothered sticking a "chicken" sticker on this box considering there is a punch out for the Big Chicken already pre-printed. But I digress.

Del Taco is rolling out a new taco that is touted as "a bigger, fresher and better-tasting crunchy beef taco, worthy of the brand’s name." The taco will sell for $1.39 and they are also offering a turkey option. This fast food item is meant to be a nod back to the original taco served up by Del Taco over 50 years ago. It "features the perfect ratio of meat to cheese," according to their press release.

I'm happy to see the effort put into an old stand by and look forward to trying it. We'll probably review it here soon.
