Taco De Carlos (old Carl's Jr. Mexican fast food chain)
In the early '80's my family used to go every Sunday after church (at times even twice a week) to Taco De Carlos, a Carl's Jr. fast food place devoted
to the best Mexican fast food I have ever known. Anybody remember it? Anybody know what happened to it? I imagine the food was of such superior
quality that it was too expensive to make and sell to the average fast food consumer. There were a couple that I knew about located in Southern
California near Carl Karcher Enterprises besides the one in Anaheim that was my family's hang-out. On their menu was the unforgettable "California
Burrito", with a crispy crust and a whole green chili, and the "Taco Grande." The company's merge with the Green Burrito is a sad, sad replacement to
this dinosaur of Mexican fast food chains. Bring back Taco De Carlos!
Maybe we should've gone THERE on your 21st? Instead we started at the OTHER family hangout, CASA DE SOTO'S, in Garden Grove. Umm Mmm, Yummy!! Then
off to that neat place in Costa Mesa. What was that called? What a nite! How come you didn't drink your OWN Kamakazi's? Offer to drive -- but not
a stick shift? One headlight? Uh oh. "Slow down, Carmen, you're pbottomin' a cop!" We were so BAAAAD! Apartment sitting? Dude, you owe me
a vacuum! ROTFLMAO! Publish RAG MAN. I know the editor...... (Carol lives!) .......whooooops! This isn't

I recently asked someone directly at Carl Karcher Enterprises about whatever happened to Taco De Carlos, and, paraphrased, I got my reply. Here's the
story:
In 1972 Carl's Jr. decided to enter the Mexican food market by opening restaurants called "Taco de Carlos," which featured a broad menu of burritos,
tacos and other Mexican fare, as well as hamburgers, fries and other items for those who preferred less spicy meals. By the end of the decade they
had 17 units in their Mexican chain. At the time, nobody else was really expanding in the Mexican fast-food business. Unfortunately, the concept did
not do as well as they'd hoped and they wanted to spend more time and energy towards focusing on developing their burgers. Eventually, they closed
those units. Most of those buildings were sold to other fast-food chains. In the late 80's, based on the rising popularity with Mexican fast-food,
coupled with not really wanting to let go of the "Taco de Carlos" idea, they again were looking into expanding into the Mexican fast-food market. So,
in 1988, realizing that they were a recognized brand with a quality product, Carl's Jr. began dual-branding with the Green Burrito. By doing so, they
could attract the Green Burrito's loyal customers and introduce them to their Carl's Jr. products and vice versa.
I came to the end of my quest for an answer, but that doesn't do any good in regards to my wish to bring Taco De Carlos back!!!!
I lived in LA back in the early 80s as a youngster and very much enjoyed the tacos and bean burritos! The bean burritos were a great value for my
parents who were struggling musicians. Take care!

I've never heard of it, and I've lived in SoCal all my life! There must not've been any in L.A.
Sounds good though! Thanks for sharing!
There was a Taco de Carlos on the corner of Tenesee and Redlands blvd in Redlands California. It closed sometime in the 80's.
Yes the "California burrito"was my favorite. After it closed Carl's jr. carried the same burrito under the name "Crispburrito"
Then some time later about 86 and again under the name Fiesta Burritos. they were smaller and come in multiple packs. (sort of the size of eggrolls)
Although these were very fattening, i hope someday i can find them again.
