Pioneer Chicken Branches

Anne Parrish:

There are only a few branches of Pioneer Chicken in the Los Angeles area. Furthermore, there are no branches in the San Gabriel Valley area. Where can I send an email for the Pioneer Chicken Headquarters know that we need more branches in California?

Fast Food Source Editor:

There is no Pioneer Chicken HQ anymore. The remaining stores are independently owned and operated. The chain has been out of business for years!

It's a shame they have dwindled down to five units - I remember one in Santa Barbera/Goleta CA on Hollester Avenue, it was in a shopping center with a Vons Supermarket. My parents used to take my brother and I after church on sundays. My family moved to Oklahoma in 1974 and I can STILL remember how good Pioneer chicken tasted - loved that crust!

I remember pioneer chicken as well. I grew up in Hawaii and now live in Georgia. Is there possibly a way to get some my way? I have searched the web for awhile to find anything out about Pioneer and until today found nothing. Pioneer is the best of any chicken made and sure would like to help them come to Georgia.

I am going to Pioneer Chicken in 10 minutes

Haha...

There is still at Pioneer Chicken in Echo Park....near Dodger Stadium, and another one in Bell Gardens....I go to them about once a month....

The chickens tastes the same....its awesome. If I ever go to Popeyes, which bought out most of the Pioneers in LA, I fell like I am slumming.

The Chicken

Where I grew up, there was a KFC, and a Pioneer right across the street from each other. We used to frequent both of them depending on our mood. Well, as years went by, Pioneer went away - the KFC still stands.....AARRGGHH!!
Does anyone remember the cool stuff you could get at Pioneer? I remember getting a hoky little magic kit; my favorite thing about that kit was this ghost that had a piece of fishing line attached to it - you tied the end of the line to your shirt button, and then you could manipulate the line and make the ghost float.

As for you people who have eaten at the one(s) in L.A. recently - does it still tast the same? Which one is better? As far as I know, there is one on Sunset at Fountain, and another one in Echo Park.

Thanks!

I'll answer my own question ;-)

I went to the one on Sunset and Fountain last night - it was awesome! Chicken is just like I remembered. Next trip I'm going to get the fish (same batter as the chicken) and the fries.

i miss pioneer!

Years ago, Pioneer chicken was a weekly habit for me. every payday I was there grabbing a bucket and feasting on the huge, crunchy, thickly battered pieces. sadly the last site that I was aware of in Ontario, CA closed. I am so pleased to find out that there are a few still serving chicken the same way they did in the late 70's. I am already planning a vist to the Bell gardens store.

I worked at Pioneer North Long Beach in 1982. (82 or 83) Me and the Mexicans all worked out back in the kitchen. We used to have some fun playing cheraides (sp) trying to understand each other. I learned that Franks La hot sauce was the perfect condament for Chicken. That chicken was good!! Corn on the cob sucked though... Hi AL..

LOL. You are only a "small fry" for your first post. When you asked what the deal was, that became your second post and now you are a "happy meal".

RE: Pioneer. I went to the location in Bell Gardens about two months ago. That's where I got the pics of the carousel of butter and the close-up of the chicken. Still as greasy and tasty as ever!!!! :P

Bell Gardens??

Bell Gardens? Is that the North Long
Beach location? 1982 was a long time ago.
I live in Mbottomachuttes now and haven't been to southern California in 20 years. I only dream that my friends are still there. I've just now looked at at a map of LB and I think the place is on South St. Please tell me that's one of the few still open..

Sadly, no. The one I am talking about is between the 710 and the 5 off Florence. You can see the address on this website in the Los Angeles guide. :(

Nevertheless, maybe you can share some insight into what it was like to work at Pioneer in the heyday?!

I had fun there. I got one raise in my eight months of $0.10/hr. Al, the GM, made it sound like he really went to bat for me on that one. You were encouraged to make a career of it, but only my Mexican friends, with whom I worked out back, saw any future in it. Those guys worked two stores, six days a week, Six and 1/2 hours at each store for all six days. No overtime! They would do laundry on their day off. Those guys never stopped. They were making the future for their familys and their self. When I think back, I would love to revisit those days. I would have it all the same way.

There was no future for me, but some good memorys.

As to what I have read, there are only 5 Pioneer Chickens in Southern California and no headquarters. The five Pioneer Chicken restaurants are owned individually and is not a chain anymore.
